A group of students from Banquete High School competed last week in the Area Small Schools Academic Competition at Riviera High School.
The Small Schools Academic Competition, which was held Feb. 24, has awarded over $240,000 in scholarship money over the past four years. Students were divided into a maximum of three teams that consisted of three members. The teams were randomly given questions from the fields of English, Science, Math and Social Studies.
Teams with the top five scores advanced to the state competition.
All three Banquete teams advanced to the state level of competition and will compete April 20 at Mary Hardin Baylor University in Belton, Texas.
Shelby Malek, Justin Gibbs and Christopher Gonzalez placed second at the competition and each student received a $250 scholarship.
In third place were Roy Wessels, Kaleb Tichavsky and Dylan Gray, each winning a $200 scholarship.
Wade McElroy, Josh Harris and Trisha Villarreal placed fifth at the event and were each awarded with a $100 scholarship.
Eddie Garcia served as a team proctor and alternate at the area contest and will be joined by Veronica Gonzalez and Samantha Lira at the state contest.
