Charity League will award a major grant to The Ark Assessment Center and Emergency Shelter for Youth during a press conference April 21 at the shelter in Calallen.

The amount of the grant has not yet been announced.

Charity League is a nonprofit organization comprised of 40 women who raise funds annually for local charitable projects.

The grant, representing the outcome of the 2008-2009 fund-raising campaign, will be presented by Maria Uecker, president, and Leah Coehn, welfare chairman.

The Ark is a nonprofit organization that cares for minors who are removed from their homes by Child Protective Services (CPS) because their lives were considered to be in danger due to physical abuse, sexual abuse or neglect by a parent or guardian.

The Ark is the only licensed facility within an 80-mile radius contracted by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to provide assessment services and emergency shelter for up to 37 children and youth, from birth through age 17.

Nearly everything required for their well-being is provided in a safe environment for up to 90 consecutive days while they are evaluated for placement in an appropriate long-term site where their needs can be met.

The grant will go toward the construction of a 6,350 square-foot wing to The Ark to be called The Stork's Home.

The 24-bed addition will provide space for long-term care, reduce the number of minors from this region having to be housed outside of the region and help to keep sibling together in order to comfort and ease their transition.

Charity League's fund raising efforts include an annual style show and luncheon.

During its 2007-2008 drive, $198,500 was raised for the Coastal Bend-Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross to purchase a chapter-owned emergency response vehicle and rescue utility vehicle.

Delma Trejo is The Ark's executive director/administrator.

Sister Milagros Tormo, M.J.M.J., is the board president. The facility is a project fo the Missionary Sisters of Jesus, Mary and Joseph of the Mount Thabor Convent in Calallen.

The Ark Assessment Center and Emergency Shelter for Youth is located at 12960 Leopard Street.
