Applications for upcoming Master Gardener classes are being accepted through July 30.

Master Gardeners are volunteers who assist in the horticultural programs of Texas AgriLife Extension Service. Some volunteer projects include "Learning To Grow" school gardens, the Children's Garden at the Corpus Christi Botanical Gardens, beautification projects, assisting with composting classes and plant care clinics, and answering phone questions from the general public.

Interns receive a minimum of 50 hours of specialized training by state and local experts. In exchange, they commit to 50 hours of volunteer service within a year of completing the class.

A $125 fee covers manuals, supplies, and soil testing costs. An additional $50 deposit toward volunteer service is also required and is returned upon completion of volunteer service prior to Dec. 31, 2009.

Orientation is mandatory and scheduled for 9 a.m. July 30 at 710 E. Main St., Suite 1, in Robstown.

Classes are available in Corpus Christi and Rockport and are open to residents in Aransas, San Patricio and Nueces counties.

Classes begin Aug. 13 and run through Dec. 3.

The Aransas/San Patricio class will be held in Rockport on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 5 p.m. and the Nueces County class will be held Wednesdays from 8:15 a.m. to noon.
