Julio R. Garcia, Jr., 89, went to be with our Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 26, 2016. He was born in Robstown, Texas on August 29, 1926 to Julio, Garcia, Sr., and Lucia Rodriguez Garcia. Julio was raised by his aunt and uncle, Cuco and Lillie Gonzalez after his mother passed away. He proudly served our country in the U.S. Army. After receiving his military discharge Julio graduated from Robstown High School. He worked at Lack’s Furniture Store, Lieberman’s Department Store, and thirty years with Corn Products. He was a four year member of the Robstown Independent School Board (1960-1964). He was also a Councilman for the City of Robstown for 10 years (1964-1974). In 1974 he was appointed to the City of Robstown Utility Board and became Chairman of the Board. Julio was the Mayor of Robstown for 9 years (1983-1992), Nueces County Drainage Commissioner for 16 years, on the Board of Robstown Housing Authority for 3 years, and on the Board of Directors with the RTA for 8 years. Julio also served as a Truant Officer for Robstown School Systems, and a Baseball Umpire for 27 years. He was an Advisory Member for the Robstown Area Development Commission. Julio was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus who also served on the Parish Council. Julio has had a lengthy career serving Robstown and his leadership has served the community well. He will be dearly missed by all of his family, friends and the Community of Robstown.
He goes home to the Lord to reunite with his parents, Lucia and Julio Garcia, Sr.; his aunt and uncle that raised him, Lillie and Refugio Gonzalez, Sr.; one sister, Esther Garcia; and three brothers, Rogelio Garcia, Ray Gonzalez and Adalberto Gonzalez, Sr. who preceded him in death.
He leaves to cherish his memories to his wife, Pura Garcia; his daughter, Vilma Martinez; his sister, Odilia Flores; three brothers, Valentin Garcia, Refugio Gonzalez, Jr., and Armando Gonzalez. He was also blessed with two grandchildren, Mark (Kelly) Martinez, Kimberly Martinez; three great-grandchildren, Caroline Martinez, Carolyn Carlson, Tyler Martinez and numerous other relatives and friends.
A Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 01, 2016 at Ramon Funeral Home Chapel in Robstown, Texas. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Robstown, Texas. Services will conclude at the church with Military Honors.
