Charles "Charlie" Ray Zapalac, 71, passed away suddenly March 18, 2010, after a short illness. He was born May 13, 1938 in Orange Grove. Texas to the late Lawrence C. and Francis Zapalac .
Charles retired after 34 years from TxDOT as supervisor of the sign shop and 21 years in the Army Reserve. In his retirement he was well-known as the neighborhood "yardman." Charles also was a member of the Robstown Volunteer Fire Department and the head cook for all state barbeques and fish fries.
He was also known for his homemade bread. Charles was an excellent gunsmith, known for his attention to perfection on stocks and bedding.
He was an avid experienced hunter and fisherman.
He enjoyed quality time with his two sons.
Surviving him are his wife of 48 years, Shirley; two daughters, Cheryl (Sam) McMeekin and Theresa (Charles) Caceres; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Lawrence (Bobbie) Zapalac and John (Wendy) Zapalac; two sisters, Bobbie (John) Kirkland and Marcie (Albert) Milner; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
Graveside service was held Monday, March 22, 2010 at Memorial Park Mausoleum in Robstown, Texas at 10 a.m. with entombment following.
