Jose Maria Del Pilar "Joe" Barrera Jr., 61, passed away on April 26, 2011.
He was born in Morton on Nov. 12, 1949 to Jose Maria Del Pilar Barrera Sr. and Elida Franco Barrera. Joe was an Alumni of St. Anthony's School and Altar Server. He graduated from Robstown High School in 1967. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army from 1969 to 1975, where he served his country during the Vietnam War. During his high school years, he was a parts runner for Bobby Milstead and worked in the parts department for D.C. Rachael Ford. After returning back from the war, he was a self-employed truck driver for the next 36 years, hauling grain, cotton and produce for Whitley Trucks. Later, he hauled freight all over the 48 states and border of Canada. He was recently employed with Andrews Disturbing in Corpus Christi. Joe was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and a longtime resident of Robstown.
He was preceded in death by his father, Jose Maria Del Pilar Barrera Sr.; and his grandparents, Jose Maria Barrera, Maria de Jesus Barrera, Manuel Franco and Anita Leal Franco.
He is survived by his mother, Elida F. Barrera of Robstown; brothers and sisters, Johnny (Isabel) Barrera, Elias (Elva) Barrera, Fernando F. Barrera, Belia F. Barrera, Elia (Guy) Stone, Daniel Barrera, all of Robstown, Diamantine (Robert) Trevino of San Antonio, Hector (Sherrie) Barrera of Stilwell, Okla., Ruben (Nora) Barrera of Corpus Christi, and Ricky Barrera of Wolfforth; his aunts, Hortencia Vallejo and Julia Gutierrez; his cousin, Senovio Barrera; nieces and nephews, Michael C. Barrera, John C. Barrera and Samantha Barrera (Dustin Walley), Anthony Trevino, William J. Stone and Jo Marie Stone; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 at Ramon Funeral Home Chapel in Robstown. The Funeral Mass was celebrated at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Robstown. Burial followed at Memorial Park Cemetery with military honors. Honorary pallbearers were his nieces, Samantha Barrera, Jo Marie Stone; brother, Fernando Barrera, and brother-in-law, Robert Trevino. Pallbearers were Ruben Barrera, Ricky Barrera, William J. Stone, Guy Stone, Joel Fuentes, and Ramiro Vallejo.
