Alejandro T. "Alex" Cruz, 71, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008.

He was born April 14, 1937 in Alice to Alejandro Cruz Sr. and Herlinda Trevino Cruz.

He retired after 33 years from the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station where he was an aircraft mechanic. He also served his country in the U.S. Army. Alejandro was a member of the Texas Baptist Volunteer Chaplaincy Ministry, Templo Jerusalem Assembly of God, Prisoners Bible Institute Gospel Ministry, and Church of Acts Gospel Ministry. He was also a co-pastor at the Greater Faith Church. In 1995 he received an award for the Texas Department of Criminal Justice as a volunteer of the Year, in 2002 he received the FISH Award (Fantastic Individuals Successful Highlights), a 25 years of service award for the Army Depot and the 2004 Jefferson Volunteer Award. He was a board member for the Juvenile Parole Division. He was a volunteer Chaplain for the Glossbrenner Unit, the Nueces County Sheriff's Department Jail, Martinead Hall Juvenile Department and the Prison Ministry in San Diego. He was also licensed for ministry for the Southside Baptist Church. Alejandro would volunteer to distribute groceries to area communities. He was a former member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, and a member of Carismatico, Crusillistas and a Eucharistic Minister. He was also an umpire for the Little League, Northwest Oil Belt, International West Side and National.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Cruz of Robstown; two sons, Ricky (Diana) Cruz and Eddie Cruz, both of Robstown; his aunt, Ninfa Gonzalez of Alice; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A prayer service was held on Tuesday, Aug. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Ramon Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, at the Richard M. Borchard Regional Fairgrounds with Pastors Paul and Monica Martinez officiating. Entombment followed at Memorial Park Mausoleum.
