Family and friends of Colton Rusk and the entire South Texas community are coming together Saturday morning in honor of the U.S. Marine from Orange Grove’s sacrifice for his country.

The Run for Remembrance: Colton Rusk Memorial 5K is Saturday. The event begins at 8 a.m. at The Grove Baptist Church in Orange Grove. The 5K will begin and end there.

Registration for the event has been ongoing, however race day registration is available at 6:30 a.m. on the day of the 5K at The Grove Baptist Church in Orange Grove.

For those who already preregistered, packet pickup is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Bowden Ford in Alice and from 5 to 7 p.m. at The Grove Baptist Church Friday.

Rusk, 20, a U.S. Marine who graduated from Orange Grove High School in 2009, was killed in Afghanistan in 2010. Rusk was a dog handler and a machine gunner. He was deployed to Afghanistan on his 20th birthday.

Growing up in Orange Grove and through high school, Rush was liked by all, athletic and an all-around good guy. In high school, he was was named senior class favorite and an all-district football player.

According to 5K organizers, the event is meant to give the community an opportunity to come together on the weekend of Colton Rusk’s “Angelversary.”

“Running or walking 3.1 miles together is a small token of gratitude we can show for Colton paying the ultimate sacrifice for our country,” organizers said. “The Rusk family generously gives out thousands of dollars in scholarships each year. One hundred percemt of all proceeds will be donated to the Colton Rusk Scholarship Fund.”
