With almost 1,000 wins and three state championships, Steve Chapman’s name in synonymous with South Texas high school baseball.

However, the longtime Calallen coach is having his name included with the finest baseball coaches in Texas High School Baseball this weekend. Chapman is part of the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association’s 2017 Hall of Fame. He is now the third coach from the Corpus Christi area inducted in the last three years. Former Moody and John Paul II coach Steve Castillo was inducted in 2016 and the late Steve Castro from Robstown was inducted a year earlier.

The induction is at the THSBCA’s annual convention in Waco.

Chapman took over the Calallen program in 1983. His resume has been outstanding since then. With the Wildcats, Chapman has a record of 967-204-2. He has 25 district championships, 28 state playoff appearances and state championships in 2000, 2005 and 2008.

He is currently second on the all-time baseball coaching wins list in Texas. Moreover, he’s the winningest active baseball coach in the state.
