The Alice Coyotes (7-2) hosted the Gregory Portland Wildcats (6-3) on Friday, Nov. 8 at Memorial Stadium. The chilly 50 degree weather had playoff implications, It was a "win and you're in situation" for both teams.


The Coyotes started off on defense and shut down the Wildcats as they did for most of the night. Alice's first score came off a 2-yard scamper from Senior Quarterback Isaiah Aguilar. Junior running back Rj Salaiz also pitched in the coyotes offensive onslaught with a pair of touchdowns (15yd), (18yd). Senior Waylon Moore made his weekly visit into the end zone with a 27-yard touchdown grab from Aguilar. In the fourth quarter, Aguilar connected with junior Jacob Guzman for an 81-yard touchdown pass, (extra point Ceja) which put the coyotes up 43-7. Defensively Alice held GP to just 1 out of 10 third down attempts, also causing 2 fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions, one of which was taken for a 102-yard score by Senior RJ Salas.


After the win Coach Atwood gave credit to his coaching staff for coming up with a good game-plan and to the team for executing it, "making the playoffs is a goal we set as a staff and as a program".


" We focused more and went hard every rep and every play in practice. It could’ve been our last game for us so we played our hearts out," said Senior quarterback Isaiah Aguilar .


The Gregory Portland Wildcats end their season on the road with a 6-4 record. With the win the Alice Coyotes end their regular season with an overall record of 8-2.


The Coyotes will face the Mercedes Tigers in the first round of the playoffs Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 pm.
