For part of Saturday night, it appeared the Corpus Christi Hammerheads were well on their way to a second-straight victory.
The Ruff Riders' Quincy Carter had other plans on how this game would finish. Despite a solid showing by Corpus Christi's offense and a valiant effort for the team's defense, the Hammerheads lost to the Ruff Riders, 48-37. Corpus Christi led for most of the way, but Carter, the former Dallas Cowboys' quarterback, threw for three second-half touchdowns and ran another in to steal the win away for the Hammerheads.
Before that, Corpus Christi had a pretty good handle on things. Quarterback Cory Miles hooked up with Schuyler Anderson for a 21-yard touchdown strike to begin the contest.
The Hammerhead also benefited from a one-yard touchdown run by runningback Redford Borel and a 26-yard field goal by Rene Vasquez. The defense then stepped up and put points on the scoreboard when Chris Williams picked up a fumble and returned it 20 yards for a score. With the extra point by Vasquez, the Hammerheads went ahead, 23-19.
Later in the opening minutes of the third quarter, the Hammerheads extended their lead to 30-22 after a one-yard touchdown run by Stephen Fillmore.
It was all Carter and the Ruff Riders after that. Corpus Christi's only fourth-quarter points came off a 16-yard touchdown pass from Toric Goins to Anderson.
Corpus Christi is now 2-5 for the season and tied with Odessa for fourth place in the Lonestar Division of the IFL's Intense Conference. The Hammerheads will be at home Saturday night to take on the two-win San Angelo Stampede Express. Game time is 7 p.m. Saturday in the Central Pavilion Arena in Robstown.
Miles finished the game completing 11 of 29 passes for 115 yards and one touchdown. He was intercepted twice. Miles also ran the ball three times for 12 yards. Anderson led all Corpus Christi receivers with three catches for 44 yards and two touchdowns.
For Carter, he threw six touchdown passes and completed 14 of 26 passes for 162 yards.
He also rushed for a touchdown.
