The Calallen Lady Wildcats slightly stumbled out of the gate, losing to the Alice Lady Coyotes, 46-42, Friday night at the Calallen High School gym.
Valerie Perez had a banner night, leading the way with 17 points for Calallen. Most of her points came from outside the 3-point arc as she went 4-for-4 on the night.
Amanda Haven also scored in double-figures with 12.
For the Lady Coyotes, Olivia Salas was the leading scorer with 13 points. She, too, had a great night from 3-point range, going 3-for-3.
Alice had a slight edge after the first quarter with a 13-11 lead, but the Lady Wildcats played a little harder in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Coyotes, 19-13.
At the half, Calallen was up 30-26.
The Lady Wildcats significantly slowed down in the second half.
Although they were outscored by three points in the third quarter, the Lady Wildcats held a slight 37-36 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Alice took over the lead near the end of the game, and Alice's defense held Calallen to just five points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Coyotes pulled out a come-from-behind win.
The Lady Wildcats are hoping to overcome their loss as they face the Robstown Lady Pickers on Friday.
The game will be played at Robstown's gym at 6:30 p.m.
