The Corpus Christi Rugby Football Club is hosting the first annual "In A Van Down By The River 7s Tournament" on Saturday at Labonte Park in Calallen.

The name is insipired by the SNL skit about a motivational speaker. The league hopes the tournament will motivate locals to enjoy the sport of Rugby Union.

Rugby Union is forerunner to American-style gridiron football, and is played in over 100 countries across the globe by men and women from age 5 to 85. Rugby sevens is a variant of rugby union in which teams are made up of seven players, instead of the usual 15.

A 7s match cosists of two seven-minute halves rather than two 40-minute halves during the "XVs" version. Rugby 7s is popular throughout the world with the Internaitonal Rugby Board sponsoring 8 tournaments in different rugby hotbeds around the world from Los Angeles to Hong Kong.

CCRFC hopes to raise funds to help support its women's side. With four teams confirmed already, Saturday's tournament looks to be an exciting start to a new Corpus Christi Rugby Football Club tradition.

Captain's call is 9:30, and the first kickoff will be shortly afterwards, with matches taking place about every 25 to 30 minutes until the finals in the early afternoon.
