Calallen safety Paul Castillo was recently named first-team All State by the Associated Press. Castillo had a solid senior season with 113 tackles and six interceptions, both team highs.
Also recognized on the All State team were running back Marcus Price, offensive lineman/kicker Jake Brearton and defensive linemen Michael Wiser, all named Honorable Mention.
With another strong season ending in the State Semifinals, the 'Cats dominated 31-4A's All District teams with 28 overall selections.
With 1770 yards rushing, 432 yards receiving and 29 offensive touchdowns, Price was the clearcut choice for the District's Most Valuable Player. Six other players were given special honors with Castillo being named Defensive MVP, Brearton Most Outstanding Lineman, Wiser Most Oustanding Defensive Lineman, Avery Cortez Most Outstanding Defensive Back, Austin Revels Most Outstanding Linebacker and Trevor Moses earning Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
Joining the players was Calallen defensive coordinator, Steve Campbell, who was named Coach of the Year. Campbell's defense had a strong season, allowing just 10.8 points per game. The defense also pitched four shutouts on the year, including a streak of 19 consecutive shutout quarters.
Calallen players to make the first team included quarterback Preston Dorsey, wide receiver Hayden Woods, center Mikey Aguilar, tackle Dillon Vaughan, linebacker Ryan Garcia, defensive end Tate Bammert, cornerback Nick Espinosa and safety Austin Castillo. Cortez was also named to the first team as a return specialist.
Also on the first teams was Tuloso-Midway linebacker Stevin Leal. Leal was the lone representative for T-M on the first team, leading the team in tackles for a second straight season.
Second team selections included Calallen's Cooper Storm, Marky Perez, Jake Baca, Kade Young, Marcus Escobar and Dylan Duff as well as Tuloso-Midway's Tyler Smith, Armando Adams and Joseph Segura. Brearton also received second team honors as a punter.
Honorable Mention players included Tommy Conroy, Jared Langley, Sheldon Bammert and Sean Vickers all from Calallen.
Tuloso-Midway's Adams, Michael Garcia, Albert Garza, Ricky Hernandez, Jonathan Iglesias, Andy Mohl, Hunter Stipp and Thomas Vasquez were all named to the All Academic team.
